Arhar Dal - Low Cal

Ingredients: 50 gm arhar dal (toor dal) 1 cup water 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder Salt to taste 1/2 tablespoon ghee or oil 1/4 teaspoon cumin seeds 1/4 teaspoon mustard seeds 1 small onion, chopped 1 small tomato, chopped 1 green chili, chopped (optional) 1/4 teaspoon red chili powder (optional) Fresh coriander leaves, chopped (for garnish)

Arhar dal

Preparation

1. Rinse the arhar dal in water a few times, until the water runs clear.

2. In a small saucepan, add the dal and 1 cup water. Bring to a boil and then reduce heat to low. Add turmeric powder and salt. Cover and simmer for 20-25 minutes, or until the dal is cooked and tender.

3. In a small pan, heat ghee or oil on medium heat. Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Once they start to splutter, add onion. Saute for a few minutes until the onions are soft and translucent.

4. Add chopped tomato, green chili (if using), and red chili powder (if using). Saute for a few more minutes until the tomato is soft and pulpy.

5. Add the cooked dal to the pan with the onion-tomato mixture. Mix well and bring to a boil. Add more salt if needed.

6. Simmer for a few more minutes until the flavors have blended together. Turn off the heat.

7. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice
