Maharashtrian Varan

Ingredients for this Recipe

Toor dal (split pigeon peas)

Small tomato, chopped

Cumin seeds

Ghee

Coriander leaves

Salt to taste

Preparation

1. Rinse the toor dal in water and soak it for 10-15 minutes. Drain the water from the dal and add it to a small saucepan.

2. Add 2 cups of water to the saucepan and cook the dal over medium heat until it becomes soft and mushy.

3. In a separate pan, heat the oil or ghee over medium heat.

4. Add the cumin seeds and asafoetida to the pan and let them splutter.

5. Add the chopped tomato to the pan and sauté for a few minutes, or until it becomes soft and mushy.

6. Add the cooked dal to the pan and mix well.

7. Add salt to taste and simmer the varan for a few minutes.

8. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or chapati.
