Preparation

1. Rinse split pigeon peas (toor dal or arhar dal) and soak them in water for 30 minutes. Drain the water and set aside.

2. In a small pot, heat oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.

3. Add onion and sauté until golden brown.

4. Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a few seconds until fragrant.

5. Add 1 small chopped tomato and cook until it becomes soft and mushy.

6. Add coriander powder, turmeric powder, and salt to taste. Mix well.

7. Add the soaked split pigeon peas and mix well with the masala.

8. Add water and bring to a boil. Lower the heat, cover the pot and let it simmer until the dal is cooked throughly.

9. In a small pan, heat oil and add curry leaves. Fry for a few seconds until crispy.

10. Add the fried curry leaves to the dal and mix well.

11. Add lemon juice. Mix well and let it simmer for a few more minutes.

12. Serve hot with rice or chapati.
